Living with an 85% attendance target
An 85% line leaves little idle inventory. On 40 classes you may miss 6; on 80 classes you may miss 12. That is the opening-of-term ceiling using floor(N × 15 / 100), before any sick day. After two unexplained absences the remaining budget is already smaller than a long weekend plus a family event.
Some departments pick 85% for capstone studios, language drills, or lab safety briefings. Others never use it. If your portal shows 75% in one place and 85% in a course outline, get the conflict in writing. This page pre-selects 85% so status colours match the stricter number: 80% would read as “getting risky”, and 79% as below.
Worked example: short module
A six-week elective has held 12 of 18 sessions. You have 10/12 = 83.3%, already under 85%. Six remain. Final total 18; 85% of 18 is 15.3, so you need 16 present if the institution rounds the count up the way this calculator does when it ceilings the required total. You have 10, so you must attend all 6 remaining and you still sit at 16/18 ≈ 88.9% only if you miss none. One more skip finishes at 15/18 ≈ 83.3% — still under 85%.
Worked example: long lecture series
You have 51 of 60 lectures (85% exactly). Twenty remain. Final total 80; 85% of 80 is 68. You have 51, so you need 17 more presents and can miss 3 of the 20. The “I am already at 85%, I can relax” instinct is wrong: staying at 85% while the total grows still consumes almost every remaining seat. Three misses over twenty classes is one long weekend, not a habit.
Use “How Many Can I Miss?” with your real remaining count rather than the start-of-term table. Then keep a subject-by-subject log in the tracker if 85% is enforced per paper instead of as a blended average. Rounding when the bar is 85%
Short modules make rounding painful. 11/13 is 84.6%. Some portals show 85% after rounding; some show 84.62% and still fail an “at least 85%” rule. This calculator reports one decimal on the check tab and does not round you over the line. If 84.6% is displayed as 85% in your LMS, ask which value the exam form uses.
Repeating a lab might add a held session without adding a present if you were marked absent the first time and the retake is recorded separately. Recalculate after the office posts the extra row. An 85% target has almost no slack for duplicate held entries.
